Suzy Birmingham

I’ve been a maker of sorts all my life. When I was a kid, my very first camera was a compact point and shoot, the Kodak Disc. Despite it’s startling technical limitations and desperately small negatives, I adored it and spent much of my free time capturing what I found most compelling about the world around me. As an early adopter of navel gazing, that consisted of staged pictures of me and my possessions.

Photography taught me to always observe, to pay attention to detail, to tell stories, and to change my perspective. I’ve continued to self-document photographically, both while attending school and in my day-to-day (thanks Instagram!), but I’ve since learned that expression, either of self or otherwise, can sometimes be more compelling when practiced in subtler ways. Through design, illustration, crafts, painting, and even the occasional to-do list, I find that I can say so much without giving it all away.
